The Vision
|
|
|
Leading research centers and academic institutions in Pakistan all recognize the
limited capacity and resources available to engage in rigorous economic research.
This initiative identifies an innovative potential route to overcome the challenges
posed by paucity of resources and build sustainable local research capacity at Lahore
School
for the future.
IERP aims to pursue its objectives through three activities: firstly
IERP aims at establishing core research teams around the areas of expertise of researchers
at the center/economics department; secondly IERP aims at picking up on the expertise
of young economic students at leading universities abroad to work with the core
teams and come up with joint working papers for the center; thirdly the IERP aims
at providing established academics with the local resources required for conducting
research on issues pertaining to Pakistan’s economy. The benefits to Lahore School
of this collaborative engagement include recognition as a leading center of economic
research in Pakistan and easier recruitment of fresh graduates once they have worked
with the core teams on research projects and recognize opportunities available at
the center to pursue their own research interests. More importantly, this will be
an ideal learning opportunity for research students at Lahore School as they will
get a chance to work on a variety of research projects for their thesis/dissertations.
There is an increasing interest in many universities abroad on engaging in research
initiatives locally. Adeel Malik at Oxford, Asim Khawaja and Atif Mian at Harvard,
Dean Karlan at Yale University, Khalid Nadvi at University of Manchester, Jishnu
Das at World Bank and Kamal Munir at Cambridge have shown keen interest in the past
in working on research projects in Pakistan. And, this initiative could tap on the
research potential from collaborative projects with these leading researchers.

The Preliminary Plan
|
|
In our discussions and brain storming sessions we have outlined a short term and
medium term strategy for launching this initiative while blending it well with the
long term vision for the research center and economics department. We are embarking
on a 1 year short term plan and 3 year medium term program.
