The Centre for Research in Economics and Business (CREB) was established in 2007, as an independent research centre at the Lahore School of Economics, Pakistan. Its primary objective is to conduct policy-oriented research with a rigorous academic perspective on key development issues facing Pakistan and to promote public debate on policy issues through conferences, seminars, and publications. CREB organizes the Lahore School’s Annual Conference on the Management of the Pakistan Economy, and publishes Working Paper and Policy Paper Series to disseminate the research being done at the Centre.

Financial Crisis and Migrant Remittances: Estimating the Effects on Growth and Poverty |
Salman Asim, Anum Bukhari, Azam Chaudhry, Naved Hamid, Aisha Khan, Mahreen Mahmud, Tareena Mussadiq
As the global economy recovers from the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression, the growth in smaller South Asian economies maybe impacted by a drop in migrant remittances which are a most important source of external inflows. In 2008, remittances as a percentage of GDP in Pakistan (4.20%), Bangladesh (11.40%), and Sri Lanka (7.20%) exceeded official development assistance by More than four times, and financed a significant portion of the current account deficit. In this research initiative, sponsored by the South Asia Network for Economic Institutes (SANEI), a team of researchers from the Lahore School of Economics investigates empirically the effects of the global financial crisis on remittances growth and national income, and the impact of remittances on household poverty in these three economies.

Public vs. Private Schooling Choice at the Household Level |
Why do parents choose low-cost private schools in Pakistan when free public schools are available? In 2008, 43 percent of the primary school children in rural areas of the Punjab province were enrolled in private schools. Yet, there is hardly any information about parental expectations regarding the benefits of sending their children to private schools. A team of researchers at CREB, led by Prof. Masooma Habib, has recently secured a research grant from the Privatization in Education Research Initiative (PERI) for undertaking a survey based study in rural Punjab to understand the reasons why parents send their children to private schools.

Developing the International Growth Center Pakistan Program: ‘Firm Capabilities’ Research Cluster |
The International Growth Center (IGC) Pakistan program aims to promote sustainable development in Pakistan through research partnerships in three areas: (i) macroeconomic stabilization and new growth initiatives, (ii) state capability, and (iii) social services. As part of the new growth initiative, the IGC Pakistan team has started work on developing a research program centered on ‘Firm Capabilities.’ In Pakistan, this effort is being led by Prof. Theresa Thompson Chaudhry of the Lahore School of Economics. International academics who are collaborating with Pakistani researchers in this cluster include Prof. Asim Ijaz Khawaja at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, Prof. Chris Woodruff and Prof. Rocco Macchiavello at Warwick University.
